Coalition policy discussion paper on Gambling Reform
The Coalition has released a Policy Discussion Paper on Gambling Reform to give the local community the opportunity to have a say on the important issue of problem gambling.  The discussion paper covers all types of gambling including the fast growing area of online gambling.  The challenge for governments is balancing the legitimate right of adult Australians to gamble responsibly with the establishment of appropriate protections and support for the small number of people for whom gambling can have tragic personal and financial consequences.  The Coalition’s approach to problem gambling is about addressing the social, economic and policy challenges of gambling reform.  The Gillard Government and its mandatory pre-commitment scheme is about responding to the politics of minority government.
A Working Group has been established to consider the responses from the community, industry, state and territory governments and to investigate options that effectively address problem gambling.  I invite community members to participate in this debate by reading the discussion paper and giving me feedback to pass on to the Working Group. Copies of the discussion paper can be downloaded from my website at www.peterdutton.com.au or by contacting my electorate office on 3205 9977.
Dickson Community Awards
Every year on Australia Day I present the Dickson Community Awards to individuals and groups in Dickson who have achieved in the areas of volunteer work, environmental work, youth achievement or sport.  If you know a group or member of the community who you believe deserves to be recognised for community service or achievement please feel free to nominate them for one of these awards.  The person you nominate must live in Dickson and nomination forms can be found on my website at www.peterdutton.com.au  or by calling my office on 3204 9977.  Nominations close on Friday 13 January 2012.
Pool Safety
With the weather warming up I would like to take the opportunity to remind families about water safety.  In the last five years over 150 Australian children under the age of five drowned.  Fifty percent of drownings occurred in the home swimming pool where your immediate action can make a difference.
The Royal Life Saving Society have a home pool safety checklist on their website at  www.homepoolsafety.com.au and other fact sheets that may help prepare parents and carers for summer.  If you are unable to access the website you can contact Royal Life Saving on 1300 737 763.
With the help of water safety experts Australia wide, Laurie Lawrence, in conjunction with the Australian Government, has put together a comprehensive water safety resource for parents and caregivers of children under five. The DVD ‘Living with Water’ covers all aspects of water safety with an easy to view format and is broken down into developmental stages to outline specific water hazards as your child grows.
For a free copy of the DVD please call my office on 3205 9977 or drop in to Shop 3, 199 Gympie Road, Strathpine.
Safe and Happy Christmas
I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and Happy Holiday season.
