CHRISTMAS IS ALMOST UPON US

By the time this edition of the Grapevine is on the streets, we will be within a few weeks of yet another Christmas and I’m sure like me, you all wonder where the past 12 months have gone.  There is also no doubt that the older we get the faster they come around.
It has been another year of considerable achievement and I look forward to working with you all in 2011 to make our substantial part of the huge Moreton Bay Regional Council an even better place to live.
As this is the last edition of the Grapevine before Christmas, I would like to take the opportunity to wish you and your families a holy, enjoyable and safe festive season and a hope that the New Year is kind to you all.
Despite this busy time of the year, I may see some of you at the Combined Churches’ carols and Swaggies, which I am pleased to continue to support to help offset their production costs.  Access to Council services continues to be available over the holiday period on 3205 0555.  (This number also contacts the Council’s Out of Hours Service for emergency matters).
SOCCER FIELD DRAINAGE
Council crews will shortly commence construction of drainage works around the north eastern corner of the Dayboro Soccer pitch in an effort to fix an intermittent problem with ground water causing a significant wet/soft patch on the field.  Weather permitting, these rehabilitation works should be completed in time for the commencement of the 2011 footy season.
SADDLEBACK TO VILLAGE PEDESTRIAN LINK
For the residents of Alcharinga Estate, the achievement of a safe crossing of Dayboro Rd and access to the Village must seem as if it is staying at the bottom of Santa’s sack.
I had the pleasure of catching up recently with the residents of this area at their annual street party, to which Dot and I have been kindly invited for the last 10 years, and explained the latest on this matter.
Despite the Department of Transport and Main Roads only prepared to give approval for a crossing on the Petrie side of Saddleback, I met onsite recently with the new team of Council traffic and design officers who, with some minor changes, are able to confirm support  of council’s long held position that a safe pedestrian refuge crossing can be achieved on the township side of Saddleback.
The residents also share my view that pedestrians and particularly children would not backtrack across Saddleback towards Petrie to cross Dayboro Rd but rather take the most direct route.
I have now requested Council to approach the Department seeking a review of their position and will also discuss this with our State member, Carolyn Male when we have our next regular meeting.
SOCCER AGM AND TROPHY DAY
I was pleased to recently attend the Dayboro Dingoes AGM and Trophy Presentation and congratulate the Club on a successful 2010 season.  A special highlight was presenting the inaugural Moreton Bay Regional Council trophy to Edde Bennett on his selection as the Club’s ‘Player of the Year’.  Congratulations Edde.
MT SAMSON ROAD SCHOOL CAR PARK
Some months ago Council provided additional car parking on land adjoining the Mt Samson State School to assist in relieving the pressure on parking as the school is experiencing a growth phase.  Whilst council is concerned that it has to meet the cost of providing this type of service for a State owned facility, the outcome does benefit the school community.
It was intended to bitumen seal and line mark this car park during the Christmas school holidays, but this has now been delayed until the completion of the school building program and removal of construction traffic which is currently accessing the construction site across the car park.
TRAFFIC ISSUES – DAYBORO VILLAGE
I recently visited Dayboro with Council traffic engineers as part of an inspection program following requests from residents regarding a number of parking and traffic related issues around the village.
One of these matters related to sight distances at the Heathwood St intersection and drivers will have noticed that a “no standing” section  has been signposted to improve visibility back up Williams Street.
New line-marking will also shortly be installed in a number of locations to assist traffic movements. Remember the YELLOW line means that you cannot stop or park.
In response to a number of concerns expressed to me about safety around car parking in Heathwood St, bollards will be installed on the eastern side of the street to protect road width and the footpath and turf edges.  It has also been brought to my attention that many local employees park in and around their businesses which limits available parking for their customers.  With considerable parking spaces available less than 150 metres away behind LIONS Park, maybe some thought might be given to this.
DID YOU KNOW… that you can do a self guided historical walk through Dayboro?  Why not get a brochure from the Dayboro District Historical Society, Dayboro Cottage, Williams Street and take a family walk during the coming holidays.
