COUNCILLORS COLUMN June09
by Cr Bob Millar THE TOWN OF YESTERYEAR
On Monday the 11th May 2009 I was pleased to participate in the launch of the brochure – Dayboro “The Town of Yesteryear” Historical Town Walk, and join many other local long standing residents and recent arrivals in celebrating this significant activity.
The ‘Walk’ will provide visitors to Dayboro the opportunity to undertake the significant learning experience about Dayboro, and in particular, the 18 historical sites around the Village.

Carmel Bond and her enthusiastic Historical Society members should be commended on the very professional outcome of this project.
The brochure also provides the opportunity for our new residents to learn more about the area that they now call home and I would encourage them to grab a brochure and “take the Walk”.
WATER SUPPLY UPGRADE
Over the next several months contractors will be undertaking installation of a trunk water main to assist in providing a secure water supply service to one of Dayboro’s reservoirs located at the end of Enchelmaier Street.
The pipes will be laid from Mt Samson Road near Mervyn Kenman Park and following road reserves, drainage easements and other reserve areas to the reservoir.
Initial activity will take place over the next month or two with construction planned to take place between September and December 2009.
A temporary contractor compound will be established in Mervyn Kenman Park.
UPGRADED ACCESS FOR OCEAN VIEW RURAL FIRE BRIGADE
In conjunction with the recent road works and sealing of James Street Ocean View, I was pleased to be able to source additional funding to upgrade the access driveway to the Ocean View Rural Fire Brigade Station.
The access has now been sealed and will no doubt relieve the Brigade members of having to negotiate the greasy gravel driveway in rainy periods.
TRAIL BIKES
Illegal motocross and trail bike riding is putting riders in danger, upsetting people in our communities and causing damage to our environment.
Motocross riding is not permitted in many State forests, forest reserves, plantation forests and national parks.
Find out about the best places to ride by visiting the Queensland Government trail bike site at http://www.sportrec.qld.gov.au/Outdoorrecreation/TrailbikeridinginQueensland.aspx and let’s be considerate to our neighbours and the environment.
FREE MULCH TRIAL – Results from May
As advised in my May column, Council conducted a Free Mulch trial to coincide with International Composting Awareness Week.
You may be interested to know that this proved very successful with more than 3,550 residents taking advantage of this offer.
The majority of mulch was collected from Bunya and Dakabin Refuse facilities.
Along with this mulch we have also sold approximately 100 compost bins which are excellent for our environment.
If you would like to acquire a compost bin they are available from the Strathpine Customer Service Office and cost $35.

As part of Councils program for upgrading parks this financial year, Stage 1 of an upgrade to the picnic area at Apex Park on the Mt Samson Road will begin in early June. The works will be undertaken to refurbish the picnic facilities, and in the long term, to rationalise parking in the area. The Stage 1 refurbishment will include removal of old log rail barriers to expand the picnic area, a new picnic shelter with table and bench seats, installation of a new bubbler and a gas BBQ, vehicle control bollards and slip rail, and re-grading of parking areas. Further works are planned to include shrub and tree planting and pathways.
