HUGE CLEAN UP AUSTRALIA DAY TURNOUT
On a warm Sunday 1st March more than 200 volunteers turned out at 7 sites throughout the 600 square kilometres of Division 11 to participate in this year’s Clean Up Australia activities. Representatives from service clubs, scout groups, rural fire brigades and neighbourhood watch groups joined with an increased number of private citizens to help collect refuse from along our roadways and public areas. Around Dayboro the Lions and Apex Clubs were again active along with the Dayboro Scout troop and the Samsonvale Rural Fire Brigade. Whilst most regular participants have noticed a slight reduction in the amount of litter being collected each year, the amount still being collected is somewhat disappointing and I will provide some detail on this in a future column when all the information has been collected. No doubt increased fines for littering are helping to reduce littering along with better community awareness but the amount of mixer drink cans and fast food wrappers still tell their own story.
2009 RED SHIELD APPEAL
As many readers will be aware, the Salvation Army, in addition to all of its ongoing good work across the community, has recently been very active in the field during the Victorian Bushfire disaster, providing supplies and counseling to both the emergency service personnel and affected residents. This years Red Shield Appeal will be held over the weekend of 23/24th May so please give freely when you see the collectors around your area or if you can help with a few hours of collecting please give Major Ken Beer a call on 3863 3762 or 0409 059 554.
COUNCIL WORKS
Council staff have recently replaced light poles at the tennis courts and completed the resurfacing of swimming pool carpark. The sealing of James Rd Ocean View and the entry driveway to the Ocean View fire station were also due for completion in late March.
FREE MULCH
Council is offering residents the opportunity to obtain some free mulch during International Composting Week between Saturday 2nd May and Sunday 10th May. Residents can collect up to two cubic metres of mulch from one of Council’s landfill sites between 7am and 5pm during this period with the Bunya Rd and Gympie rd Dakabin sites being the closest for our community. Additional information is available on 3480 6666.
SAMSONVALE FIRE STATION
I was pleased to recently attend the official opening of the extensions to the Samsonvale rural fire brigade’s headquarters at Kobble Creek. Passers by will have noticed that this group of active volunteers have developed their facilities from modest beginnings many years ago to what is now a modern and well appointed complex to support their activities. The long days of selling raffle tickets at Shows, Rodeos and Dayboro Day have certainly paid dividends and the members can be proud of their achievements.
TRANSFER STATION FACELIFT
Council waste management staff are in the process of “beautifying” the Dayboro transfer station with an attack on the weeds that have been invading the site and a remulching of the landscaped areas. Some additional planting of native trees and shrubs will follow once the mulch has cooled. Councils transfer station provide a valuable service to the communities without a kerbside collection and for those residents who generate additional domestic waste.
WHITESIDE ROAD – POSTMANS TRACK INTERSECTION
Council Officers have advised that by the time this edition “hits the streets”, work will have commenced on the significant upgrade of this intersection at Samsonvale. The $320, 000 project is expected to take a little over two months to complete and involves extensive earthworks and the relocation of Telstra and Energex services.
DID YOU KNOW?
That there are 2,684 kilometres of roadway in Moreton Bay Regional Council of which 421 remains unsealed. There are also 1,010 kilometres of cycle and footpaths.
