Council in disaster management forum April09

Mayor Allan Sutherland said the conference, to be held in Emerald in June, would provide councils with an opportunity to hear from local and national experts.
“Disaster management is becoming increasingly relevant for local authorities,” he said.
“Here in Moreton Bay we sustained an enormous amount of damage in last year’s November storms while the Victorian bushfires and North Queensland floods show how quickly natural disasters can occur.”
Cr Sutherland said items to be discussed at the conference would include climate change adaptation, lessons from recent disaster events and communicating disaster warnings.
“Key speakers will be drawn from local, state and federal governments as well as experts from the corporate sector and the conference will concentrate on local planning and management to ensure the best outcome for communities,” Cr Sutherland said.
