The community has emerged as the biggest winner from Caboolture’s successful 2008 QUT Urban Country Music Festival.
About 35,000 day visitors enjoyed the action-packed May long weekend festival, that boasted 500 artists across 11 different stages.
Moreton Bay Region Mayor Allan Sutherland said an estimated $2 million was injected into the local economy from visitor spending on things such as accommodation, retail sales, food, sightseeing and other activities.
“Local community groups and organisations shared in $90,000 raised throughout the festival, which attracted visitors from across Australia and overseas, Cr Sutherland said.
Hundreds of campers moved in for the weekend, while accommodation at hotels, motels and B&Bs throughout Caboolture were booked out weeks in advance.
Interstate festival visitors came from New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia and Tasmania and international visitors were from New Zealand, England and the United States.
While 39 per cent of visitors were from Moreton Bay Region, 52 per cent of visitors came from regional Queensland, 8.5 per cent from interstate and 0.5 from overseas.
Cr Sutherland said the 2008 QUT Urban Country Music Festival had proven itself as a major national event that had significantly lifted the profile of the region throughout Australia.
“Our fast growing region in the growth corridor of South East Queensland is quickly earning a reputation as a place to live, play and work and the QUT Urban Country Music Festival has become one of the best events in the Australian country music calendar,” Cr Sutherland said.
“I would like to thank the sponsors and volunteers who worked behind the scenes to make this year’s festival possible.”
The QUT Urban Country Music Festival, organised by Moreton Bay Regional Council, celebrated its 5th birthday this year.
Planning for the 2009 Urban Country Music Festival has already begun, taking into account the feedback received from the 400 visitors who were surveyed.
