One of the many happy aspects of our recent Christmas gathering was a  presentation by President Geoff Harris of  “Certificates of Appreciation” to some notable members of our volunteer team.  Notable due to the fact that they have all spent years of their personal time, talents and energies in the rapid and significant development of Samford’s museum complex.

Feb2014_Dayboro’s Kerbside Recycling Collections Under Threat

Dayboro kerbside recycling collections are under threat if a decision is agreed to introduce a Container Deposit Levy (CDL) in Dayboro. The proposal is currently being considered by Federal and State environment ministers.
 
The CDL would see Dayboro residents paying an additional 10c on every water bottle, drink can, and milk, wine and other drink bottle purchased. This is termed as a ‘deposit’, which can be redeemed if a consumer takes the clean container to new public collection points.

Feb2014_Pine Rivers VIEW Club

VIEW stands for Voice, Interests and Education of Women.
In December, Pine Rivers VIEW members volunteered for a day Christmas wrapping at Stafford City Shopping Centre for a gold coin donation.  Money raised assisted The Smith Family and “Learning for Life”program.

Fishers are reminded of the need to brush up on their fish identification knowledge when hitting the water in 2014.
Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) District Officer Trevor Thomson said species misidentification and lack of knowledge of the rules had been an issue over the Christmas break.

Feb2014_U3A PINE RIVERS

We held our very successful first meeting for the year on Friday 17th January and had over 100 members attend whilst signing on several new members.  Plenty of information on all the new courses on offer was provided. 
Our next meeting on Friday 21st February at Bray Hall, Petrie will be “THE EYES HAVE IT- AN EXPO ON VISION IMPAIRMENT”.

In November, Pine Rivers View Club held a Melbourne Cup Day luncheon at a member’s home on a lovely sunny day.
 
Members joined in a cup sweep and a prize was presented to the best hat on the day.

Parents, grandparents, students and community members spent an inspiring day on Sunday 10th November listening to presentations from the Year 12 students of Samford Valley Steiner School.
All year the students have been working on an Independent Research Project (IRP) of their own choice in addition to their school studies.

Dec2013_U3A PINE RIVERS

U3A member Jean Sheehan, a member of the Needle and Thread class was encouraged to give a talk on Silk.  Jean has a great knowledge of the Indian and Thai silk industry and provided a laptop presentation and demonstration on how to fit and wear a sari – very gracefully.  Her talk was accepted enthusiastically by the other students and Class Tutor Jean Green.
