DELIVERING ON OUR SOLAR HOT WATER PROMISE
Last month, Premier Anna Bligh outlined the State Government’s plan to deliver 200,000 solar hot water systems to eligible Queenslanders at the very affordable price of $500 for households and $100 for pensioners.
It’s raised a lot of interest, and rightly so – it’s good for your hip pocket as well as helping to reduce our carbon footprint, an objective in the Bligh Government’s Q2 plan.
This great initiative means the average home can save up to $300 a year on their electricity bill.
It’s also important for the solar hot water industry to have certainty so the Bligh Government wants to move ahead as quickly as possible. This is a real chance to grow the solar industry here in Queensland.
So I urge anyone who is interested in the program to contact the Queensland Hot Water Program Hotline on 1800 243 585 or visit the Office of Clean Energy at www.cleanenergy.qld.gov.au to register their interest.  Operators are available to take your call between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday (except public holidays).
NOMINATE A YOUNG VOLUNTEER THIS YEAR
Nominations are now open for the 2009 Queensland Young Volunteer Awards.
The awards recognise young volunteers, aged 12 to 25, who give up their time and energy to help others.
One third of young people in Queensland are volunteers and they’re making a real difference to people’s lives. More often than not they’re unsung heroes and they deserve recognition for what they do. That’s one of the main reasons behind these awards. We want to acknowledge their contribution to the community.
I encourage community leaders, teachers, sporting, social and community organisations to nominate young volunteers in the local community.
There are two age groups – 12 to 17 years and 18 to 25 years – in the following categories:
Green volunteers – volunteers who have made a contribution towards protecting the natural environment
Young entrepreneurs – volunteers who have raised funds for the local community or who have contributed to social enterprises
School action volunteers – students or student groups carrying out school-based volunteering activities
Community volunteers – individuals or groups whose volunteer work has strengthened the local community
Art and culture volunteers – individuals or groups whose volunteer work has contributed to the arts or the cultural development of the local community
The Bligh Government had made a commitment to boost the number of volunteers in Queensland by 50% by 2020 and young volunteers are important to our target. They’re the volunteers of the future.
Entries for the 2009 Queensland Young Volunteer Awards close on 10th June.

Until next time
