“THE MELODY LINGERS” WITH THE SAVOYARD SINGERS
Sunday 14th September
On Sunday 14th September The Savoyard Singers present their 10th anniversary Mt Mee performance, celebrating a decade of happy music and delighted audiences in the graceful old Mt Mee Hall.
The performance this year, “The Melody Lingers” is a selection of some of the most loved songs from the legendary era of the great ‘musicals’. We will hear from writers of the ilk of George and Ira Gershwin, Lionel Bart, Irving Berlin, Borodin, Cole Porter, Leonard Bernstein, Rodgers and Hammerstein and even Roy Orbison. For example there will be music from shows such as “Oliver”, “Top Hat”, “Jeckyll and Hyde”, “The King and I” and “Porgy and Bess”, but there are many others.
The Savoyard Singers are members of the Savoyard Musical Comedy Society, which was established many years ago to maintain a tradition of Gilbert and Sullivan productions in SE Queensland. They still do G&S, but they have diversified. There are several major productions each year, most recently the enjoyable “Thoroughly Modern Millie”. The Society has a truly astonishing pool of talent, and their productions – at their home in the very professional theatre at Wynnum’s Iona College, never fail to impress.
The ‘Singers’ are organised and directed by Miss Phyll Griffin, a foundation member of the Society, with the aim of doing travelling performances of light hearted and tuneful musical entertainment, and they even do a few party, wedding etc ‘gigs’.
There are two new faces this year, with Sarah Copely and Georgina Purdie joining the familiar Mary Ewing, John Hills, Mark Craig, Ross Muirhead, and of course the irrepressible Artistic Director and leader Phyll Griffin.
Soprano Sarah has a certificate of Music from the Queensland “Con” and is heavily involved in local musical theatre. Most recently she performed in Savoyards’ “Forbidden Broadway” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie”. Georgina studied at London’s Trinity College and has since performed extensively with several local musical societies and with Queensland Opera. Georgina has even written her own one act cabaret and was a featured artist in this year’s Brisbane Cabaret Festival.
The show begins at 2pm, and it will run until 4.30pm or so, with an interval of 30 minutes to allow patrons sufficient time to do justice to the legendary ‘country’ afternoon tea on the deck or lawn. Many who attend like to make a day of it, and picnic at the Look-Out or at the Gantry in the Forestry Reserve, or indeed book for lunch at ‘birches’ restaurant, which conveniently situated next door. Admission includes the generous afternoon tea, and is $25.00 – or $20.00 for pension card holders. Secondary school students are half price and primary schoolers free.
But booking is essential – please phone Kay 5498 2104 or Joyce 5498 2270
This is a non-profit event proudly sponsored by the Moreton Bay Regional Council.
