Dickson Seniors’ Expo 2014
Strathpine Community Centre, Mecklem Street, Strathpine.
11-12 August 2014

The Dickson Seniors’ Expo is a great opportunity for retired, or about to retire, seniors to access information on activities and services available in our community.  More than 50 businesses and not-for-profit organisations are represented at the Expo.

Exhibits include: Seniors Social Clubs, hobbies and fitness, travel opportunities, Federal, State and Local Government Services, and advice on numerous health issues.
Entry and complimentary sample bags are free, there are lucky door prizes to be won, interesting and informative speakers on a variety of subjects and a fashion parade for women and men.
A Free Shuttle Bus will be running to and from the Expo every half hour from the Westfield Strathpine bus stop area.  Off street parking will also be available.
Carbon Tax Gone
In great news for local families and small businesses, the Carbon Tax has at last been repealed.
Scrapping the Carbon Tax will save the average household around $550 a year, including around $200 on the average household electricity bill and around $70 on the average gas bill.  This will reduce cost of living pressures for all Australians.
The Government’s consumer watchdog, the ACCC, has been given extra funding and powers to ensure that savings are passed on to consumers.
Scrapping this tax has been a grassroots effort – led by the Prime Minister, but helped by the voices of everyday Australians.  It may have taken time and there were obstacles along the way, but we’ve done this together.
There’s much more to do, but removing the world’s biggest Carbon Tax from the backs of everyday small businesses and families is an important step in building a stronger economy.
Sporting Schools
Schools will be able to apply to take part in the Federal Government’s new $100 million Sporting Schools initiative, from 1 January next year.
As Minister for Health and Minister for Sport, I am very proud to have delivered this programme.  It will introduce more sport to a new generation of children in our community.
The initiative provides more opportunity for our children to participate in a range of sports, before, during or after school.
Schools will be directly linked with sporting clubs to drive ongoing participation.  Teachers will be able to access a range of training guides and coaching courses.
It will benefit around 850,000 children across more than 5,000 primary schools and 80 secondary schools across Australia.
On average, it is expected that each grant would be worth around $1700.
Sporting Schools will encourage our children to participate in physical activity and will foster a love of sport, helping tackle increasing levels of obesity among children in the process.
I’m delighted with this initiative, which offers a way for children in Dickson to have access to sport and start building regular physical activity into their lives.
