Carbon Tax
Despite not having a mandate the most incompetent government in our history is bringing in one of the most complex structural changes to our economy in the form of a carbon tax. After mishandling roof batts, school halls, border protection and the live cattle industry, how can we trust this government with a $9billion new tax?
The carbon tax will affect everyone at a time when the cost of living is soaring. In the first nine months of the Gillard Government, electricity prices are up by 12.5%; water prices up by nearly 13%; fuel up by 7%; education costs up by 6%; food by nearly 5%; and rent by 3%. Australians have just started paying the flood tax and more than 3 million households are going to be worse off immediately due to the carbon tax. Many Australians will pay well above any compensation, which is temporary, and the tax will be permanent and escalate each year.
All of this pain with no gain for the environment. The prime minister refuses to go to an election on the carbon tax. I encourage you to have your say and let the Prime Minister know your views on the carbon tax by downloading the petition on my website at www.peterdutton.com.au or contacting my office on 3205 9977 to request a copy.
Dayboro Show
With three days of perfect weather and a fantastic effort by all involved in organising the Dayboro Show it was another successful and enjoyable event for our community. Thank you to everyone who visited my information booth during the show to say hello and provide their feedback on the carbon tax.

Free tax help for low income earners
With tax time upon us, local low income earners will again be able to access free help with their tax returns at my office. A volunteer tax helper will assist residents to work through the process of preparing and lodging their tax return.
Tax Help is available to anyone who is classified as a low income earner, which for individuals, is a person who earns less than $50,000.
To make an appointment please contact my office on 3205 9977. All tax returns must be lodged by October 31.
Insurance Inquiry
I encourage anyone who has made an insurance claim related to the recent natural disasters to take part in an anonymous survey. The online survey can be found at www.aph.gov.au/insurance and will help inform an inquiry into the operation of the insurance industry during disaster events and how it can be improved in the future. Written submissions may also be made to the inquiry and must be submitted by August 12, 2011. For more information about the inquiry, visit the website or contact the Committee Secretariat for the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Social Policy and Legal Affairs on (02) 6277 2358.
Jeans for Genes Day
On Friday August 5 you can help make a difference in the fight against children’s genetic diseases. It’s easy to get involved by wearing your jeans, giving a donation, or buying a badge and supporting the Children’s Medical Research Institute.
For more information go to www.jeansforgenes.org.au or freecall 1800 436 437.
