AUG2010 SHOW HOLIDAY
Moreton Bay region will mark the 2010 Ekka show holiday on Monday, August 9.
Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said some council facilities and many local businesses would close for the public holiday.
“While council offices, libraries and the Redcliffe Cultural Centre will be closed, waste facilities will remain open and swimming pools and leisure centres will use a Sunday timetable,” Mayor Sutherland said.
Brisbane will celebrate its Ekka holiday on People’s Day – Wednesday, August 11.
An Alternative to the Ekka for Wednesday August 11
While Brisbane gets the day off for the Ekka show holiday on Wednesday August 11, wizards, elves and fairies will be weaving their own special magic at Caboolture’s Centenary Lakes.
Moreton Bay Regional Council Deputy Mayor and councillor for Division Three, Greg Chippendale, said the traditional Caboolture Family Fun Day was on again this year with non-stop free entertainment, activities and side-shows from 10am to 4pm.
"This is a great day out for local families who have the day off for Brisbane’s Ekka show holiday – because they work in Brisbane – but aren’t in a position to stretch the household budget to a day at the Ekka, or simply can’t face the exhibition day crowds at Bowen Hills," Cr Chippendale said.
"Caboolture’s Family Fun Day, a free Moreton Bay Regional Council event, is a more affordable alternative to the Ekka, and also brings families and our community together.
"This year we’re encouraging the kids to come dressed as wizards, elves and fairies to be eligible for on-the-spot prizes, but I am hearing goblins and trolls might also be eligible to share in this year’s prize booty – it’s worth a shot."
Cr Chippendale said community groups and service clubs would be running food stalls, although families would be welcome to bring their own picnic lunch.
"It’s a low cost way of entertaining the family without the Ekka crowds," the Deputy Mayor said.
