AUG2010 NETWORK TOPIC
The Federal Election is set for August 21 and we a confronted with the media frenzy of reporting on seemingly every action of the leaders of the 2 main political parties.
Unfortunately, with nominations closing after this edition goes to print, we are unable to feature information on all the candidates for the Dickson electorate. What we do have for you is some editorial from each of the 2 major party candidates i.e. sitting member, Peter Dutton, and Australian Labor candidate, Fiona McNamara.
NO MEET THE CANDIDATES EVENING!!
Normally we would also be bringing you details of a Meet the Candidates evening – as these are generally organised by the Dayboro District Progress Association Inc (DDPAI), in order to facilitate an opportunity for residents to hear, meet and put their questions to the candidates. A decision was made not to host a Meet The Candidates evening for this election.
Why? Well apart from the fact that this small group of volunteers already does so much with minimal evidence of support shown by attendance at their General Meetings, there is also the fact that these Meet the Candidate evenings often become a “grandstand” for stunts, and are always stacked by members of various political factions. This is done either to ask difficult questions of the candidates that they do not support, or, to put questions to their preferred candidate, creating an opening for them to cover issues not mentioned in their initial address. But the main factor is that the number of local residents at these meetings is always overshadowed by the number of non-resident attendees.
