A LIONS TALE Nov 08

Dayboro Lions Community Movies.
Can’t win ‘em all.

The monthly movies are operated as a social community event, and we endeavour to provide wholesome movies within 6 to 10 weeks of first screening.  They are delivered from the main distributor, we use a professional projectionist, and the cost to us is over $500 per movie.   They are chosen often long before release, and on the basis of recommendation, seeing the trailer, and reading many reviews.
The October movie Son of Rambow (PG) eluded this filtering. It was expected to be a splendid feel-good story about adventurous kids who use initiative to make an action movie inspired by the heroics of Rambo.  The reviews and trailers described nothing of the unpleasant characters, and the bullying, thieving, lies, bad behaviour and inappropriate language of these young kids.  Even David and Margaret’s views did not elucidate to this.  Maybe the current vernacular of  much worse language on television and other movies numbs the sensitivity to this.  The all-come-good ending was too little and too late to make up for the poor tone of this flick.
There is a procedure in place for comments on any upcoming movie, and if you have anything helpful to say then please email dayboro.lions@gmail.com   Get your name on the moviegoers list by an email to this address.
Next movie is the Disney film WALL-E  (G)  an animation about a pleasant robot who makes good.  It is to be screened on 15th November. Reviews can be found at:  http://www.yourmovies.com.au/movies/index.cfm?action=movie_info&title_id=35209
There is no movie in December.
On January 17th,  Just before Australia Day, we are showing the just-released Baz Luhrmann movie Australia   This will appeal to an older audience, and there will be prizes for the best theme-dressed individuals.  So put this date in your diary, and get into the spirit!
Lions Youth of the Year – Call for entrants.
This is a prestigious award for 16 to 19 year-olds, to become an ambassador for youth.  It ultimately involves international travel etc as a representative.
Are you Grade 11 or 12?  This could be you!!!  We believe there are several of the Dayboro youth who could perform well at this.
It is gained by competing against others.  You submit details of any leadership, social and sporting achievements, and present  a short impromptu and a short prepared speech before judges.  It has several stages, the first being local at the Dayboro Lions Club, and ultimately leading to a national level.
This is all on personality and ability.  There is no fundraising or selling required.  Preparatory help/ training is offered to applicants by our expert, Steve Durley.  This alone makes it worth entering!!
Details of rules and entry form can be seen at:

District Governor Bruce Unwin presenting his Distinguished Service Award to Lion Marj Barnett.

Marj Barnett, our treasurer received an award from the District Governor at a joint meeting with Samford Lions.  This Distinguished Service Award was for Marj’s “Outstanding Club and Community Service”.  Congratulations Marj, keep up the good work.
Back in 1998/1999 the Dayboro Lions Club was desperate for someone to fill the treasurers position.
Mr Verne Barnett offered.  He did work for a book keeper for 6 months when he was 15 years old but couldn’t really remember anything.
Mrs Marj Barnett undertook the bookwork task on Verne’s behalf until 2002 when she officially joined the Dayboro Lions and continued until this day to be their most prized treasurer.
The Dayboro Lions feel that Marj Barnett deserves the District Governor Award for her enthusiasm, dedication over the 10 years, meticulous hard work and her ability to spread a contagious smile.
We love you Marj.
….More Next Month
