May2014_A LIONS TALE

DAYBORO LIONS COMMUNITY CINEMA:

Good news – the movies are to be resurrected under a different regime, with the screening of Disney’s ‘FROZEN’ on 17th May.    

This first screening will be at an introductory bargain entry of $5pp, $15/family, to allow for any teething problems (which we hope there are none)!  We will still be offering the unique Dayboro bucolic picture-house experience… doonas on the floor for the kids, low-cost popcorn, drinks, etc, and of course, Marge’s famous slices with a cuppa!

We are using a Large Venue cinema-quality digital projector, with Blu-ray media definition, similar to 2k D-Cinema systems currently in use in major venues.  The new system has been tested and results have been most pleasing.  Sound is good, but we are looking to develop it soon to be a superior 5.1 sensory sound. 

Expected screenings in the next several months will be family/kid focused, and include: The Lego Movie, Muppets, Mr Peabody & Sherman, Rio 2, and How to train your Dragon 2.  We still need to pay the same expensive licencing royalties for the public screenings, but we have had approval to obtain this.  Requests to screen more adult-directed movies will now be considered, as we need a lower gate attendance to break-even.  Movies are run by volunteer Lions, and it takes about 30 man-hours in logistic and administrative preparation, along with about 30 man-hours on the night to run a cinema screening.  But the joy of continuing the decades-old tradition, and the provision to ensure families have a chance to get out together, is reward in itself.

NEXT DINNER MEETING – May 28th:  Andrew our favourite adopted Dayboro pharmacist, who writes so informatively and amusingly each month in the Grapevine, will be giving a talk called All Things Pharmacy.  The optional meals will be fish and chips or fish and salad.  Cost is $12 and the meals can be ordered (-or not ordered!) on the evening.  Time:  7:00pm, on Wednesday 28th May in the Uniting Church Hall.  Tea and coffee provided, and it is BYO for other beverages of your choice.  Always a relaxed and interesting evening

GENERAL LIONS NEWS ROUNDUP:

Dayboro Lions have always had the unenviable commitment of car-parking supervision at the Rodeo.  This would have been and gone by the time this issue is released, and I am sure many do not know that the Rodeo profits are disbursed to local community groups who help with the event.  We are all very appreciative of this.

Also, the Diggers’ lunch, sponsored by the Lions would have been proudly presented.  It is worth a note that Lion Patsy, through George Hartnett Funerals continues to donate the flowers for the tables as they do at several other events during the year.

Our last meeting approved donations of monies to several diverse requests.  – We will be helping Dayboro Little Athletics with financing trophies and incentives, and supporting financially the Mt Samson State School Chaplaincy Hoe-down.

We were saddened by the passing of Coralie Heathwood, who was often a Lions helper at functions like Dayboro Day.  We have donated $200 to the Cancer Council in memory of this good soul.

A 2015 project is being supported.  Dayboro Lions have donated a good sum towards the Stone pillars at the Dayboro War Memorial for the 100 year 2015 ANZAC commemoration in Dayboro.  More will unfold over the forthcoming year.

The Sellin fund, financed and administered by Dayboro Lions, is providing for the ongoing medical expenses of a youngster in the area, and others in the way of fuel and parking expenses, who require frequent essential hospital visits.

We have upgraded our presentation standards, with a better projector and computer to use at monthly open-to-all meetings where we have excellent illustrated talks.  This equipment is used frequently, along with the portable PA system, to support ANZAC day and many other community events.

A discussion re the fading signs that first meet travellers to the town, resolved that we will implement upgrades to these, and include the Dayboro Lions logo, and endeavour to include other clubs and community groups’ insignia etc. as a greeting, to brag to visitors that this is great little township!
