Oct2010 SEEKING LOCAL HEROES FOR 2011 AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS

The 2010 Moreton Bay Regional Council Citizen of the Year, Alison Taylor, is hoping that there will be plenty of candidates for 2011’s Australia Day Awards.
Mrs Taylor, who has lived at Kobble Creek for more than 30 years and won one of the council’s top awards for her dedication to the Dayboro community, will be among those judging the next awards.
She said she had been “a bit overwhelmed” when she was announced Citizen of the Year for 2010.
“It was a real thrill and an honour to receive it,” Mrs Taylor said.  “You don’t do community work for the recognition, but it’s nice when people appreciate what you do.”
The human dynamo performs a host of community service roles including tuckshop convenor at Dayboro State School, treasurer of the Lutheran Church committee, Secretary of the Dayboro Hall Committee and Secretary of the Dayboro Show Society and various roles at branch, division and State levels of the Country Women’s Association.
Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor Allan Sutherland said the awards were an ideal way of acknowledging the sterling efforts of the region’s quiet achievers and unsung heroes.
“If you know of someone who gives their time freely, helps others or achieves incredible goals in their sport, community or cultural interests, then nominate them for an award,” Mayor Sutherland said.
“We’re looking for nominees who have displayed compassion to community members, provided valuable voluntary service, or who have been leaders in their field over the past 12 months.”
“Previous winners have been community group leaders, dedicated volunteers, environmentalists, high achieving sports people and musicians.
“These people are the backbones of our communities and they should be honoured for their contributions.”
Mayor Sutherland said nominations were open until Friday, October 29.
