EMU Teaches About Pets

mbrc_logo2__47x14mm_96dpi.jpgDeception Bay children are the first in the region to learn about caring for their pets through RSPCA Qld’s Educational Mobile Unit (EMU).
The EMU will visit a host of schools and events over the next two years as part of Moreton Bay Regional Council’s program to encourage responsible pet ownership.
The mobile unit, which features a classroom for DVD presentations, a bank of computers, a battery hen cage display and a student-sized veterinary set up, spent from Monday, March 2 to Friday March 6, visiting both primary and high schools in Deception Bay and providing education sessions to a range of school ages.
Mayor Allan Sutherland said council was working in partnership with the RSPCA to provide both education and discounted microchipping and desexing offers as part of broader council initiatives to help pets and their owners stay together.
“We’re hoping by providing education programs to our youngsters, and offering other events such as our Family Pet Fair in Caboolture, on March 28, we’re able to give community members the sort of information and assistance that makes it easier for them to protect their animals,” he said.
“At the EMU, local kids can learn about a range of issues including choosing an animal, how to avoid dog bites and how to treat animals in a humane and caring way,” said Div 2 Councillor, Chris Whiting.
“Raising awareness in our children today will help improve the quality of life for animals in our communities tomorrow.”
Council worked with the RSPCA to offer a Snip and Chip week at Deception Bay.  The next Snip and Chip week will be held at Wamuran from May 18 to 22 and owners can book a place for their cats by phoning 3205 0555.
Mayor Allan Sutherland said the response from residents was terrific and hoped to see many more cat owners take advantage of future council offers, to help them minimise the chance of their animals straying.
