May2015_A LIONS TALE

MEETINGS:  At the monthly open, no-obligation or cost presentation to the community on Tuesday 26th May (moved forward a day due to the State of Origin clash) we will have our local wildlife carer hero, Madonna O’Brien, telling us of some of her experiences whilst rearing an array of rescued local wildlife.  She will undoubtedly have some surprises up her sleeve… (or in her shirt..!)  This is a talk not to be missed.

A meal can be ordered on the night if you wish, $15.  The venue is the Uniting Church Hall, opposite the butcher.  Start time is 7pm.
Another opportunity to see how the Lions of Dayboro work, is to come along as a guest to our business meeting on Wednesday 13th May.  Meet the members, hear of our achievements and see decisions being made.  No membership pressure – just the chance to see if it is for you.
MOVIES:  The Movie Paddington was screened on April 18th, and ah!.. no rain ..until later!  a pleasing set of families turned up to this jolly movie, showing there is still a need for the laid-back event to continue.
The next movie is sure to be a winner – the dynamic animated PENGUINS OF MADAGASCAR on 16th May.  Community Hall, 6:30 for 7pm.  $6pp, or $18 per family. Kids -bring doonas as the nights are getting cooler.
ANZAC lunch:  Every year around ANZAC Day, Dayboro Lions sponsor a lunch and drinks for local Armed Forces personnel to show the community’s appreciation for those who serve to defend our country, past and present. Richard Hawkins, who has facilitated this event for many years, presented a preview of the new book on which he has been doing considerable research about the Dayboro military personnel who went to war during the 1914..1918 conflict.
We were pleased to have a good turn-out this year, to enable us to share our gratitude and sit with their families.  It provided for us a fascinating range of experiences – including one guy who was on the HMAS Melbourne when it collided with the US ship, which cut across its bow, and a young-looking soldier who has been involved in no less than four recent conflicts (E. Timor, Iraq, Somalia, Afghanistan).  The buzz of camaraderie across the room was fascinating, while those of us shielded from such unpleasant experiences heard from those who protect us.
Thanks to George Hartnett Funerals, who perpetually provide the flowers for the tables to this event.
ANZAC DAY:  Lions continued to provide the annual logistic support for this ever-growing event setting up in the chilly pre-dawn, and seeing through the sound PA etc. through to the main service lunch.

NEW EQUIPMENT:  As foreshadowed last month, the community is richer in health and fitness equipment now installed and functional.  Lions provided the substantial seed funding, and all credit must go to the enthusiasm of our president Dave and Teresa who drove forward the idea through administration, planning, supportive grant applications and installation.  The Table-tennis table beside the Dayboro Skate Park was a welcome addition, also driven by the dynamic pair.  Moreton Bay Regional Council provided the slab on which the table sits.  People can use their own equipment or borrow that provided by the Lions.  Equipment has been left at both the IGA and the Swimming Pool Office – A refundable deposit of $5 is required, to ensure return of the equipment for the ongoing enjoyment of the community.
GENERAL STUFF:  Lions are looking to replace the derelict signage announcing the service clubs etc. to visitors as they enter our community from the Petrie or Samford roads.  We will be allowing space on these boards for the logos our non-profit community clubs and groups, and are seeking requests for space allowance on these boards.  Dimensions of a logo are expected to be around 400mm2.
Our business meetings identify those who have fallen on misfortune in the mainly local community, and we are providing for those deserving cases.  We also have provided donations to organisations addressing wider issues, such as Beyond Blue.
….More Next Month
