Appointment as Minister for Immigration and Border Protection

On December 23 I was sworn in as the Minister for Immigration and Border Protection.  In this new role, I will be working hard as a member of the government’s national security team to keep our country safe and secure.  I will continue Scott Morrison’s great work in stopping the boats, but I also want to work in other ways to make our community safer.
Australians are generous, and every year we welcome into our country many thousands of humanitarian refugees and people coming to start a new life.  However, we don’t want to be taken for a ride.  Whilst the vast majority of people coming to our country do the right thing, some do not.  If you come to this country and you are selling drugs, ripping off the welfare system or, most seriously, being involved in heinous crimes including terrorist activity, then you don’t deserve a place in our society.
I will review a number of temporary residents who aren’t here permanently and see whether or not they deserve to stay in this great country, and I think that it is a debate that our society should have.
I will also be working hard to achieve the best possible immigration outcomes for the residents of Dickson.
If you have any comments or ideas for my new role as Minister for Immigration and Border Protection, please email me at peter.dutton.mp@aph.gov.au  to let me know.
