WHAT IS THIS BIOSPHERE PROJECT
Biosphere plans for the D’Aguilar Range landscape
(BIOSPHERE MEETING March 17 – see separate article)
Community groups and residents are encouraged to examine a plan to create a sustainable future for the D’Aguilar Range and its surrounds through a Biosphere initiative.
Biosphere project spokesperson Rosalind Leslie said the voluntary integrated land management strategy is aimed at securing the social, economic and environmental values of the D’Aguilar Range and its surrounding landscape ahead of, and in concert with, the region’s predicted growth.
“A well managed biosphere will bring wide ranging recognition, opportunity and support for the communities operating within its landscape,” she said.
The biosphere project, while receiving government support, is operated through an independent organisation with a board elected by its members. The Biosphere model is non restrictive and does not seek legislative governance. Participation is completely voluntary and is based on incentive and cooperation.
“Biosphere arrangements are aimed at balancing and promoting a diversity of values with consideration for the preservation of biodiversity, social values and economic interests and work by actively engaging the local community in cooperative decision making and management,” Ms Leslie said.
“Local benefits for the area would include effort alignment and support for cooperative weed control and conservation efforts, integrated fire and pest management, marketing support for sustainable production, opportunities for voluntary bio-carbon offset management and genuine input into a long-term vision for the area.”
