My Big, Fat, American Road Trip

by Breeanna Donohoe

In terms of bucket list items, the great western American road trip has always been high on my list of to-dos.

The best way to see this area of the US is by road.  First stop was the town of Scottsdale, you can walk the street of the old-town viewing the historic 1800s buildings, or browse the one-of-a-kind boutique shops.  Once you’ve worked up a thirst you can reward yourself with a prickly pear margherita!

Two hours’ drive north of Scottsdale you’ll reach Sedona, Arizona, which is a well-known haven for painters, poets, musicians, and photographers.

As you continue your road-trip out of Sedona, taking the scenic route through the Kaibab National Forest, thick with lush, green pine trees stretching to the sky, before reaching the south rim of the mighty Grand Canyon.  Further north is Lake Powell, with landscape and scenery so unique it gets used as the setting for many blockbuster films – the most recent being Sandra Bullock’s ‘Gravity’.  From here we had a side trip out through Navajo territory to Monument Valley –a day truly well spent.

We travelled on from here to take in two more stunning national parks; Bryce Canyon, and Zion, where the sheer magnificence of the red and white sandstone cliffs will stay with you forever.

Don’t forget at Maverick Travel you can redeem your American Express membership reward points to pay for your trip:  10,000 = $100.
