This Time of Year by the Team at Dayboro Vets

It would seem that if we keep the weather pattern we have been experiencing lately we will be heading for the type of summer seen years ago.  Hot, muggy, with afternoon storms.  For our animals this brings about several problems depending on the species.

STORM PHOBIAS

A lot of our beautiful placid pets turn to quaking, shaking bundles of raw nerves with the coming of storms.  This is also seen with fireworks around Christmas/New Year.  This will cause them to take fright, flight or hide – so they run away and hopefully get handed in to the nearest vet, hide under your bed or try to crawl up your shirt!  Any way they try to deal with this they are in abject terror.
There is a very good product on the market for calming our little mates, it is prescription so your vet will need to be consulted
PARASITES
Inside and out, the creepy crawlies that plague both large and small animals just love this time of year.  So the intestinal worms, fleas and ticks (both cattle and paralysis), flies and midges are just multiplying like crazy.
Some of these carry disease like three day sickness in cattle, paralysis in dogs and cats and anyone who has a horse with Queensland Itch will know exactly what we are talking about.
Getting on top of your particular problem can be as simple as a worm tablet or as complex as a three tier program for fleas.
The many ways to deal with the problems can be tailored to suit your particular needs, so have a chat and work out what best works for you.
There are some vaccinations for animals to prevent some of the diseases the parasites carry- Tick fever and 3-day vaccines in cattle, tablets or injections for heartworm in dogs but most preventions are either oral or put on the skin.
REMEMBER IT IS TICK AND SNAKE SEASON.  THE TICKS ARE SOMETHING WE CAN DO SOMETHING ABOUT!!!
