Sept2014_OLD MILL VET SURGERY PET OF THE MONTH
Red Dog feels ‘paw-ly’
While some dog breeds suit a lifestyle of lazing around and keeping quiet, Kelpies are certainly not one of them. So when bouncy 6 month old Kelpie pup, Red Dog, managed to break his toe, it was always going to be a battle to keep him calm!
Red Dog’s doting owner knew something was up when the normally energetic pup was limping badly and feeling sorry for himself. She brought him straight into the Old Mill Animal Hospital and X-rays revealed a fracture of one of his hind toes, which meant he needed to have a cast placed to allow it to heal properly. Although no one knows how he managed to break the toe, Red Dog’s owners think he may have been playing, got it caught in a small gap and continued to run off, as puppies tend to do!
Managing a cast in such a wiggly puppy is extremely difficult, as you can’t simply tell them to take it easy for a few weeks. Often the only solution is to confine them in a crate for the duration of his healing, and ignore the puppy dog eyes as best we can!
Red Dog is on his way to a healed bone, although we’ve seen him since the break for some cheeky misadventures even with his cast on!
