Sept2012_What Price Do You Put On Your Childs Life
?
It’s no secret that Queensland enjoys one of the best outdoor lifestyles in the world with our great climate, fantastic beaches and backyard pools to enjoy.

However the 2011 National Drowning report revealed that 28 infants and toddlers tragically drowned in Australia between the 1st of July 2010 and 30th of June 2011, including 4 who drowned in a bath or spa. These tragic and preventable deaths have a devastating impact on the families of the children lost. Drowning is swift and silent, and this is a reminder to never leave your child unattended. It is also very important for every child to be equipped with swim and survival skills.
What is the earliest age suitable for children to learn to swim?
Babies live in fluid in the womb for 9 months. Introducing babies back into the water soon after birth means they can re-experience that protective world. This can be done by bathing, using a cup and gradually pouring water over the head, or taking the baby in the shower with you. The more relaxed and comfortable babies are in the water the easier it will be for your child to learn to swim formally when they’re older.
What are the main aims of teaching babies/toddlers to “swim?”
· To enjoy the water as a familiar environment.
· Helping you and your child to become aware of the dangers.
· Teaching parents how to handle their babies safely and confidently while enjoying the water.
· Keeping one-on-one skin contact between baby and parent to maintain a close bond.
· Developing balance, co-ordination and strength.
· Socialisation with other parents and children around the same age.
· Learning to feel confident in the water for later life to help stay fit and healthy.
· Introducing children to a life-long source of enjoyment.
· Promoting good sleep and a healthy appetite.
The Dayboro Pool offers a Learn to Swim program conducted in the safe, fun and friendly environment of our heated pool, with classes spanning from Introduction to Water for small babies, right through to adult level stroke correction. Classes begin from the start of October and enrolments are currently being taken. Certain class times are always in high demand so be sure to call before it’s too late.
There may come a time when these skills save your little one’s life and become the best investment you have ever made.
