Mount Mee Road & AJ Wyllie Bridge Update
Mount Mee Road:
Works resumed on site on 6 August 2012. Works had been progressing off-site for a couple of months on additional design work.
Due to the complex geology and topography at the landslip sites on Mount Mee Road, additional design work was required to address further complexities that were uncovered during excavation works.
Work has also progressed off-site on the manufacture of Terramesh systems used in the stabilisation of slopes.
It is expected that Mount Mee Road will be re-opened to two lanes of traffic in the final quarter of 2012, weather permitting.
The department would like to thank all residents and road users for their ongoing patience as works progress on the huge task of rebuilding the road.
Information on this project is available on the Transport and Main Roads website at www.tmr.qld.gov.au, by searching ‘Mount Mee Road’, or by phoning 1800 459 366 or emailing reconstruct_northcoast@tmr.qld.gov.au.
AJ Wyllie Bridge replacement:
Construction of the new northbound AJ Wyllie Bridge is underway and progressing well. It is still on track to be completed and open to two lanes in December 2012.
Contractors are currently undertaking the major piling works and construction of the bridge piers and abutments, which are expected to continue during the next month, then works will begin on the installation of the bridge deck units.
Please remain mindful that the bridge and surrounding area is a construction zone and stay clear of any exclusion zones in place for the works – on the construction site and in the river. Reduced speed limits are in place in the vicinity of the bridge for the safety of road users and road workers.
A temporary pedestrian and cycle bridge has been mounted onto the downstream side of the southbound AJ Wyllie Bridge to provide safe access across the North Pine River during the construction of the new northbound bridge.
Users can access it from the western side of the road via existing traffic signals at the Wyllie Park entrance and via temporary traffic signals near Leis Parade.
Information on this project is also available on the Transport and Main Roads website www.tmr.qld.gov.au by searching ‘AJ Wyllie’, phone 1800 459 366 or email reconstruct_northcoast@tmr.qld.gov.au.
Land Wanted to Help Protect SEQ Koalas
The Newman Government wants to purchase land identified as suitable for the long-term protection of koalas and is inviting expressions of interest from property owners.
The Government has allocated $22.5 million over the next three years to buy land and expand koala habitat in areas where their territory is under significant pressure.
Expressions of interest will be competitively assessed against a range of criteria with habitat being a major focus.
Wherever possible, the land would also be available to the public for recreational use and increased opportunities for people to see koalas in the wild.
Expressions of interest opened on 14 August and will close on 31 October.
For more information visit: www.ehp.qld.gov.au or telephone (07) 3330 6317.
New Arrival in the Holswich Household

Bushfire Season
We have already seen a number of bushfires throughout Queensland in recent weeks. Now is the time for anyone living in rural or semi-rural areas in Pine Rivers to get prepared for bushfire season. Don’t leave your preparations until it is too late.
In preparing for bushfire season, some of the things you should consider are:
Do you have a Bushfire Survival Plan and do all members of your household know about it?
Have you cleaned out your gutters and tidied up any vegetation around your home?
Do you know what you’ll take with you if you need to leave home because of a bushfire?
Have you considered how you’ll deal with pets and livestock?
Have you got sufficient hoses, buckets, first aid supplies, torch, radio & batteries?
Are your home, contents and car insurances up to date?
If you need help to put together your Bushfire Survival Plan, there are some great resources available at www.ruralfire.qld.gov.au
Parliamentary Gifts – A Taste of Queensland
For the Speaker of the Parliament, as the Parliament’s representative, the protocol for receiving visiting dignitaries often includes the giving of a modest gift showcasing Queensland. The Speaker’s Office is considering the inclusion of more uniquely Queensland produce within these gifts.
You may know local suppliers of appropriate produce which could be suitable for inclusion. It would be great to see the Pine Rivers region showcased in these gifts. You can advise my office by email to pine.rivers@parliament.qld.gov.au if you have any suggestions that the Speaker can consider as a part of the purchasing and procurement process.
