Sept2011_GOOD NEWS STORY

A good news story from Dayboro – The town of yesteryear.
It was a Monday evening, I was heading home after work to my Billabong at the edge of Kobble Creek.
I had forgotten to take my wallet and was pennyless and almost petrol-less.
The ATM in the glovebox of the Ute yielded $9.35 in what seemed like half a kilo of five cent pieces and a gold coin..
I invested $6 for petrol at the Matilda in Daybro and paid for it in 20cent and 10cent pieces and the respectable gold coin.
I had planned a stir fry for dinner and needed an onion, a carrot, a capsicum and 2 small zuchinis.
I headed for the IGA with the handful of 5cent pieces and conscripted a young girl at the checkout to count then for me while I "shopped".
I came back to the checkout with my purchase and the tally on the till came to $3.85.
The score from my 5cent stash was $3.35.  I was 50cent short for the makings of the stirfry .
The lady who had taken over from the young girl at the checkout asked me what I wished to take out and I opted to sacrifice the Zuchinis.
In a nano-second, the young man standing next to me at the counter said. "She’is right mate I’ll pay for it".
I thanked him and headed home, stirfry in tact, fed and watered a friend’s chooks I was looking after and all was well.
Now…..For the past few months my poetic mind has been consumed in planning an ANZAC presentation that I hope to take into schools.
I have been reading about the ..Spirit of ANZAC (the Spirit of Australia) in Gallipoli  France … Vietnam … Iraq … Afganistan…
How .. When the chips were down and it all seemed too late .. A voice called out, I’ll help you Mate".
Here I was in Dayboro (The Town Of Yesteryear)…In 2011….In the front line at the IGA and about to sacrifice the Zuchinis …  when a voice calls out (in a nanno second) "She’s right mate I’ll pay for it!"
It wasn’t big bucks.  It was.. The speed…The attitude..The spirit..The effortlessness…And the smile on his face.
It was …The Spirit Of ANZAC…The Spirit of Australia..Alive and well in Dayboro ( The town of Yesteryear).
I enjoyed that stirfry and a line from one of my poems came to mind..Quote..I’ll always be there if you need me mate .
And I’ll carry you for just as long. Till the buds on the wattle start to bloom again. At the edge of the Billabong.
Thanks Mate.
