TUNNEL BALL VISION

The students and staff of Dakabin State High School are excited to announce that a world record attempt will be held on 16th September, 2011 at the school’s oval.
Dakabin students from all year levels will work together to break the current Guinness World Record® for Largest Tunnel Ball Game.  The event’s main aims are to strengthen school unity and to promote Dakabin State High School’s positive image to the wider community.
The world record attempt is the vision of a Year 11 English Communication class.  These students were given an assignment in which they had to plan an imaginary local event to engage teenagers.  However, the class came up with the unique idea to stage a school-based event centred around a world record attempt.  The whole school quickly rallied around this project and on the last day of school this term, Dakabin State High School students could earn their school a place in the Guinness Book of World Records®.
The current record for the Largest Tunnel Ball Game, held by St. Columba Primary School in Brisbane, involved 120 students. Dakabin High intends to smash this record with 200 students from all year levels participating in a tunnel ball game that is anticipated to take over three and a half hours.
Students participating in the attempt will be asked to make a gold coin donation.  This money, combined with any other funds raised on the day, will be divided evenly between a local youth-based charity that engages teenagers in a positive manner, and the school.
Students voted that half of the funds be donated to the Salvation Army’s Youth Outreach Service (Y.O.S.), a charitable organisation that offers an alternative education program for young people.  The program offers youth who have become disengaged from mainstream education an opportunity to complete their Year 10 and Senior Certificates.  This is done in a flexible setting that incorporates life skills and personal development workshops.  The remainder of funds will be contributed to the upgrade of school facilities and resources.
This history-making project is expected to attract some high profile visitors to the school.  Wyatt Roy, Federal Member for Longman, and Mary-Anne O’Neill, MP for Kallangur, have kindly volunteered their time to verify that all Guinness World Record® regulations are followed correctly.
As word of the project gets out, the list of visitors is growing; radio stations’ street crews (such as Nova 106.9 and FM 97.3), sports stars, performers, and members of the school community are joining in on the fun.  This event has also provided a great opportunity for Dakabin High to showcase the talents of the students. Performances from music, drama and dance students are scheduled to entertain and motivate everyone on the day.
