Sept10 DEAR EDITOR,

Congratulations to Bob Backhouse. He is a man of long rural experience and his advice on the “Weed This” messages was ‘spot on”.
We have a problem with the “Weed This” series in that everyone wants their land custody to be as benign and non- intrusive as possible.  Most owners of lifestyle blocks are particularly anxious to “get it right” for the environment.
Oh, that the laid back approach to Utopia espoused by the column was sustainable!  We all want to believe it.
But it won’t work!  The old saying “One year’s seeds is seven years weeds” is tested and true.  And regrettably, neighbours seem to get more than their share of the seeds of the neglect of others.
This photograph (not available online) shows two Mt Mee paddocks side by side on identical country.  The one beyond the fenceline (Behind the motorbike) has been managed without herbicides, pesticides and artificial fertilisers.
I rest my case.
The DPI website has a ton of information on weeds, weed control and in particular on those Declared Weeds that landholders must control by law.  It should be a first port of call for weed enquiries.
