Sep2013_SAMFORD MUSEUM NEWS

One of the many fascinating stories from:
“Samford Reminiscences Volume 5”
1974 FLOOD EVENT.
The following memory has been written by Samford’s very own Mr. John Domrow.  All volunteers at the Museum are very proud to have John and his family as active members of our group and we are most grateful for the contributions they make to our organization.
Copies of all volumes of “Samford Reminiscences” can be purchased  from the Museum. The memories are truly inspiring.
1974 FLOOD EVENT
by John Domrow
In the 1974 flood, a call went out for milk for the babies who were on cows’ milk.  Mr Laurie Hagen, a member of the Enoggera Lions Club set out to get milk from the farmers.  He phoned me and I rang the Camp Mountain neighbours and asked them to hold their morning milk.  Mr Hagen went up through Everton Hills and Ferny Hills to Samford Road, then to the top of Samford range.  As the roads to Samford and Camp Mountain were blocked, he travelled through a forestry track to the old rail line (then a dirt road) back on to Camp Mountain road to about one kilometre from my farm.  Then we set off with my tractor and carryall to gather cans of milk from the neighbours down through the flooded gullies and over the cow paddocks, then back to Laurie Hagen’s truck.  He then returned via the same way with all the ten gallon cans of milk to Brisbane for the babies.  (My new ten gallon can was the only can not returned).

Wednesday lunch for our Volunteers.
This photo is typical of our volunteers enjoying lunch and each other’s company after a morning of productive work. Ours is a mixed group of both ladies and gentlemen who each in his/her own special way contribute to the success and happiness of the museum.
We love morning “smoko” and lunch prepared by our lovely “kitchen maids” and guys each Wednesday and also on special event days.  The food is always excellent and no doubt is partly responsible for the fact that so many volunteers keep coming along for years.
Once more we invite all folk to consider joining us as volunteers.. just call in on a Wednesday and see for yourself.
