Residents reminded to watch water use Nov 08

Moreton Bay Regional Council is reminding residents that, even though most people are keeping their water use down, it’s important to remain vigilant about wastage.
As part of an ongoing strategy to reduce water consumption, council will be issuing letters to residents in Pine Rivers district who have used an average of more than 800 litres of water a day.  Notices will be sent to Redcliffe and Caboolture residents in January 2009, following their next water meter reading.
Council’s Enterprise Committee chair Brian Battersby (Div 10) said the vast majority of residents have been extremely successful water savers, and sometimes residents had legitimate reasons for high levels of water usage which needed to be taken into account.
“For the most part our residents have become remarkably efficient at saving water in recent years and are to be commended for their efforts.” he said.
Councillor Battersby said those who were efficient savers of water were saving themselves money as well as helping preserve precious drinking water supplies.
“Now is not the time to be complacent.  Regional dam levels remain below 42 per cent and residents should be mindful that continued excessive water use can be penalised,” he said.
Under the current restrictions, the Queensland Water Commission requires all South East Queensland councils to contact all residential water users consuming an average of more than 800 litres of water a day per person.
If excessive consumption continues over the next two water meter reading periods, without residents offering a suitable explanation such as a household with a large family or a member of the family with a medical condition, residents will be sent a notice of an outdoor watering ban for the property.
When a person breaches the outdoor watering ban they can be issued with an infringement for $450.
Moreton Bay region is currently under high level water restrictions, which took effect on July 31, 2008.
For residential users this means that existing gardens can be watered only with buckets or watering cans between 4pm and 8am any day.  Odd numbered properties may use a hand-held hose with a trigger or twist nozzle on Saturdays between 4pm and 4.30pm and even numbered properties may do so on Sundays between 4pm and 4.30pm.  Rainwater and grey water can be used at any time.
Concessions are applicable to certain users and details may be found on council’s website at www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au
