CENOTAPH RELOCATION
A PUBLIC MEETING IS TO BE HELD AT COUNCIL ROOMS – 28 WILLIAMS STREET DAYBORO – AT 7.30 ON THURSDAY, MAY 21st, TO DISCUSS THE RELOCATION OF THE DAYBORO CENOTAPH.
The Cenotaph was originally placed in the school grounds soon after the First World War and, up until the last five years, there was adequate space surrounding it to hold at least our Anzac Day Dawn Service.
As our once little community has grown, the school too has expanded, encroaching on the space around the Cenotaph.
This, along with an overwhelming increase in Anzac Day attendance numbers, means we were sadly left with no option but to hold both the Dawn and Main Services at the new Memorial erected at the War Memorial Grounds [Showgrounds] nine years ago.
A concern of The Dayboro War Memorial Association for some time has been the feeling that this Cenotaph has become a forgotten monument.
We are therefore proposing to re-locate the Cenotaph to Roderick Cruice Park – to the right of the stage, against the swimming pool fence.
The Moreton Bay Regional Council has no objections to our proposal and we are now at the stage where we need to call a public meeting to see if the community supports our proposal.
This re-location will mean the Cenotaph will again have a prominent position in the centre of town and allow its use for Dawn and Remembrance Day services in future.
It would also then be an attraction to tourists visiting town and increase awareness of the memorial and its significance to our community.
This meeting will be held in conjunction with the Progress Association Meeting.
The Dayboro District Progress Association Inc’s meeting starts at 6.30pm.
All welcome to attend the Progress Association meeting also.
