Dayboro & District Rural Fire Brigade
If you haven’t started already folks it’s time to complete your pre-summer checklist.  Do yourself and your neighbours a favor by taking the time to properly prepare your whole property.
This means more than just cleaning the gutters and mowing the lawns. Below are some of the checks listed in the Prepare.Act.Survive brochure from ruralfire.qld.gov.au
Check firefighting equipment (including standby pump)
Clear fences of rubbish and undergrowth
Check all screens – doors, windows, roof vents
Ensure roof is in good condition & gutters clear of leaves & rubbish
See that under-floor area is fully protected
Water tank – make sure it has a 50mm camlock so firefighters can use water if needed
You may have noticed we have been busy the last month conducting hazard reduction burns.  These burns use fire to reduce excess vegetation and minimise the potential for bushfires to get out of control.  We noticed a number of yellow rural numbering posts that need some maintenance.  Maybe yours is one of them.  When did you check it last?
Well, our Facebook page has taken off and thanks to those who have liked the page.  A huge thanks to those that assist by sharing the community safety messages we post.  Being prepared is not just an individual effort, but a community effort and every little bit counts.  Please keep sharing.
the Wardens’ Word
Before you light the match!
So you have your permit.  Before you light the match, check, then double check, all the conditions listed on the permit by the fire warden have been met.  Also check there are no current fire bans.  You can check this at ruralfire.qld.gov.au
…DIDYANO?…
That most houses destroyed in bushfires are lost as a result of ember attack.  Under certain conditions embers can cause fires to ignite up to 20kms in front of the main fire.  A combination of your level of preparation and your home construction will determine the survivability of your home.
VIP – Selwyn (Sel) Barr

A ridgy didge local.
Sel moved to Dayboro in 1949 & lived on the family farm tucked under the mountain on Fingerboard Rd.
His family were involved in the banana, pineapple & timber industry.  It was not till years later he was asked by a local friend to build a fence.  He moved in to rural fencing & noxious weed spraying.

He was also a long-standing member of Dayboro Apex, a founding member of the Dayboro Trail Riders Club & has a long association with the Dayboro Show & loves supporting the wood chop event.

His association with the rural fire brigade began many years before the present brigade was initiated.  Not often found on the yellow trucks but somewhere in the hills on his dozer or tractor cutting fire breaks.
He now runs Barr-Tapper Fencing & Noxious Weed Spraying with his partner Lee.
