Local resident Michael Forman will soon take to the stage as one of Charles Dickens’ most eccentric villains, Fagin. PRIMA (Pine Rivers Musical Association) is celebrating what would be the two hundredth anniversary of Charles Dickens’ birthday by putting one of his much-loved pieces of work, Oliver twist, under the spotlight in October.
PRIMA, located in Bray Park, is Brisbane’s north premier amateur musical theatre company. PRIMA believes all communities should be exposed to musical theatre—entertained at the same level as any professional production would, except, without the professional price-tag. This production is set to dwarf the rest of PRIMA’s shows when their rehearsals are soon moved into their new, larger venue, the Holy Spirit School’s Auditorium. As the scale of the venue increases and the show approaches opening night, the workload is increasing.
“We have a much bigger space to work with this time and a brand-new multi-dimensional set,” Forman said. “We’ve got bridges and stairs everywhere and an enormous stage area. With a cast of over sixty, we’ll fill it easily, that’s for sure. This show is set to soar.”
When asked about working with a cast of children Forman replied, “Working with the kids has been fabulous. They are all so keen and very talented. It’s rare to get boys to sign up for musicals these days but they all wanted to be a part of this one. Yes, the boys are back in town for Oliver and they are chalking a decent one up for the men.”
He continued, “It turns out we also have a real-life Dickens connection within the cast. Robyn Lupton, who plays our ‘Old Sally’, is descended from one of the women Dickens helped in the eighteen hundreds, those who attended his house for homeless women, Urania Cottage. You may say we have Dickens’ great great foster daughter in our show, performing in a role her father wrote.”
