Oct2012_LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor,
I want to assure Vanda Grabowski (Dayboro Grapevine, September 2012) Moreton Bay Regional Council is committed to a sustainable future for koalas.
The recent Sunshine Coast Koala Summit was an initiative aimed at replicating a koala conservation partnership that already exists in the Moreton Bay Regional Council area and has recently been extended by a further five years.
Moreton Bay already enjoys a close working relationship with the Sunshine Coast summit’s key speaker Dr Jon Hanger, and has partnered with QUT on research into a koala Chlamydia vaccine.
The Koala Conservation Partnership Project will continue to deliver a strategic approach to sustainable koala populations and include:
The development of new projects to enhance koala habitat and movement corridors
On-going support for koala disease research
An expansion of community education programs
Moreton Bay Regional Council continues to enforce strict controls on development in areas mapped by the State Government as urban koala habitat and provides funding to local koala welfare organisations, because koalas are worth fighting for.
Cr Mike Charlton
Sustainable Planning Chair
Moreton Bay Regional Council.
