So what’s been happening ?
by Ryle Winn
As a young lout I always wanted to be in the Scouts.  I was in love with their snappy belt buckles – and I was good at falling out of trees.  Good credentials.  But I hadn’t ever helped any old ladies cross the street.
To be fair we didn’t have any streets and the nearest old lady was half a mile away and I was terrified of her.  So I didn’t ever get the opportunity to become a fair-dinkum scout.
However, a couple of years ago, fifty years after my last branch broke under me, there I was at last joining the Scouts, sort of.  Now I’d better fill you in a bit.  Two things happened this morning.
Firstly, I went to put an advertisement in here for the Dayboro Scouts’ Monster Book Sale on the weekend of Sat 27th & Sun 28th of October from 9am-3pm both days.
(The Scout Hall is in Don Kerr Memorial Drive near the Football Club.  Don’t miss out on 1000s of quality, pre-loved books of every conceivable type.  Book prices range between 70c/$3, few $4.)
Secondly, now with the Whistler out of production, I’ve been asked if I’d like to write a bit of light hearted nonsense from time to time.  So, I said ‘yes’.  If circulation drops, promise I’ll … I’ll er, go away and start up my own paper. Just imagine.
So we did both at once.  The Scouts get a bit of exposure for the ‘fair’ and I’ll think up an improbable true story for next month.  Bit of scope there!
See you about.
PS  I wonder if honorary Queen Scout doctorates are bestowed upon mature age, ex-louts who wanted to be scouts.  I bet Liz bought one for Prince Charles when he turned sixty. I’ll ring Phil and ask him.  I’ve got his number.
Ring me if you want anything and I’ll sort you out. 3425 1247.
