Oct2011_Roads update AJ Wyllie Bridge

The region’s transport network reconstruction team can be contacted on 1800 459 366 or by emailing reconstruct_northcoast@tmr.qld.gov.au .
The Department of Transport and Main Roads would like to provide an update on the progress of works for the reconstruction of the northbound AJ Wyllie Bridge on Gympie Road at Petrie.
As you may be aware, the northbound side of the AJ Wyllie Bridge sustained significant damage during the January 2011 flooding event and it will be replaced.
The department is progressing different stages of the bridge reconstruction at the same time to accelerate the reconstruction process.  The community can expect to see works occurring in the vicinity of the bridge in coming months, ahead of demolition.
As part of our proposal to assist businesses in the area, the department will be reinstating traffic movements at Leis Parade, including the right turn out and u-turn facilities and this work commenced this week.
To avoid disruption to daytime traffic, some night time works were required and these occurred in the week commencing 19 September 2011.  A lane closure was required during the evening, between about 7pm and 5am, with stop-go traffic control on site.  (n.b. This information was uploaded to our Grapevine website as soon as it was received i.e. 19th Sept. – Check our “LATEST NEWS” section on the Home Page for  news and updates received between editions on  www.dayborograpevine.com.au)
Works will also start in the coming months on the temporary pedestrian and cyclist facility, which is to be used during the demolition and construction phases to maintain access across the North Pine River.
Our intention is to have the new bridge completed in late 2012.  The new northbound bridge will be built at a similar height to the southbound bridge to provide improved flood immunity for northbound traffic.
The existing northbound bridge is unsafe to carry motor vehicles, however pedestrians and cyclists can currently use it.  The southbound bridge is open to one lane of traffic in each direction.
The community can stay updated throughout the northbound bridge reconstruction, with a web page specifically created for the project at www.tmr.qld.gov.au/Projects/Name/A/A-J-Wyllie-Bridge-Gympie-Road .
There is also a free SMS service available at www.northpinebridgesms.com.au which will provide updates as works progress.
The project is being delivered under the Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements (NDRRA), a joint federal and state initiative.
