‘The Words’
By Gemma Schuhmann
The Words follows Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper) as he tries to become a well known writer in New York.  While on honeymoon in Paris he discovers a manuscript from the 40s that makes him question his ability of becoming a legendary writer.
Through unforeseen circumstances the manuscript gets published under his name and becomes a #1 bestseller allowing him to be the writer he has always wanted to be.  Then out of the blue an  old man (Jeremy Irons) turns up who lost a manuscript years ago then finds it in a bookstore under someone else’s name.  And to top it off the whole story about Rory and the old man is actually a book by Clay Hammond (Dennis Quaid).  It’s not as confusing as it sounds.
This film has many different storylines running at once with so many different characters, it’s amazing that it all makes sense.  Most of the time it all flows so smoothly considering half the time you don’t quite know who is real and who is just a story or just words.  It could have been made a lot simpler without making it into a book by Clay.  The story of Rory and the old man was already very fulfilling and powerful. However it makes the story so much more complex and refreshing.  Just when you start to forget that it’s fiction, they bring you right back into the present.  It does provide an unusual element that leaves you forever trying to figure out which story, if any, is true.
The actors in this film are fantastic.  They draw you in and make you forget about everything else.  You won’t look at Bradley Cooper and think of The Hangover, and you won’t look at Zoë Saldana and think of Avatar.  It’s a nice change.
This movie has been a long time coming for directors Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal who originally wrote the story 11 years ago.  Considering this was their first time directing, they have done an amazing job.  They have managed to make a film that on the surface is confusing and is difficult to relate to, into a masterpiece that is full of truth and reality.
‘The Words’ is a complex film that will leave you wanting to know more.
