Nov2011_UNFINISHED FENCE LEAVES KOALAS STRANDED

Local LNP Candidates have joined with local koala advocates in calling on the Department of Transport and Main Roads to finish the koala fence on Dayboro Rd to ensure the safety of the local koala population.

Mr Seath Holswich, LNP Candidate for Pine Rivers, said today “one of the most basic features of a wildlife fence of this sort appears to have been overlooked.  If a koala is on the wrong side of the fence, there are no posts in place to allow it to climb back over the fence to safety.”
“Many experts suggest that these poles should be placed every 10-20 metres along the entire length of the fence, yet they are sorely lacking along Dayboro Rd.”
Mr Trevor Ruthenberg, LNP Candidate for Kallangur, added “whilst the concept behind the erection of this fence is a noble one, in its current state it could potentially cause more harm than good.”
The LNP candidates understand that local koala advocacy groups have attempted to raise the issue with Department of Transport and Main Roads, however their correspondence has not been adequately answered to date and there appears to be no plan in place to rectify the issue and ensure the safety of the local koala population.
“Given that we are in the peak of the breeding season, where koalas are at their most mobile, this needs to be rectified as a matter of urgency,” Mr Holswich said.
