Over forty excited Grade 2 children from Enogerra State School arrived by bus for their educational and social visit to the museum.  Children were divided into groups , with each group heading to a different area.  During their visit they discussed the difference between “years ago”, or as they call it “the olden days” to present day life and technology.

The Provisional School is a real “hit” with the children, learning what school was like way back “then”.  Teaching has changed, from the old slate and pencil to the ipad, which by the way are both around the same size.  The timber display shows the different types of cutting implement used then compared to now with most tools relying on electricity.

The blacksmith is always a draw card, the children stand in awe at the different techniques used to make many different farm yard objects, whereas now they are made by machines.

Butter making also keeps them engrossed in the display. It definitely is a factory produced commodity now.  The old style kitchen and laundry  is full of “ancient articles, relevant to living all those years ago.  No modern day contraptions.  The irons weighed a ton and very labour intensive when they had to be “heated” on the wood stove which maintained a very hot heat.

Modes of transport were discussed at length, gone are the days the family went out in the old horse drawn buggy or the children rode bareback to school.  Transport is now very modern cars.  The old corner store displayed lots of products from years gone by.  The old time cashier register, the scales, buying eggs wrapped singularly, biscuits sold loose and by the pound.  Now all commercially wrapped and boxed.

I am sure the children, teachers and mothers slept very well that night.  I know the volunteers did.
