May2015_Pine Rivers youth gains spot in Youth Parliament

Member for Pine Rivers Nikki Boyd congratulated Clare Hohns as this year’s YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament representative for our local area.  Clare Hohns is one of 93 young Queenslanders selected to take part in this year’s program.
Now in its 20th year, the YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament offers young Queenslanders the opportunity to be a voice for their communities and learn first-hand about parliamentary process.
“The YMCA Queensland Youth Parliament has a strong history of empowering young people to take up challenges and lead the way,” Ms Boyd said.
“I would like to commend Clare for her choice to stand up and again nominate for this excellent program and I look forward to following her progress as Youth Member for Pine Rivers throughout the year.
“Eighty-nine young Queenslanders have been selected to represent each electorate in the state, along with four Indigenous representatives.”
Ms Boyd also congratulated YMCA Queensland on the 20th anniversary of this successful and empowering program.
“Since 1995, YMCA Queensland has brought young people together to learn about our democracy, connect with their peers and have a say about important issues facing our state,” she said.
“It is a testament to YMCA Queensland’s commitment that the program remains as relevant, challenging and popular as ever.”
In April, youth parliamentarians from throughout Queensland  met in Brisbane to form committees and discuss ideas. With the program officially launched with a ceremony at Parliament House.
The youth parliamentarians will meet again in late September for the residential part of the program, including debating bills at Parliament House.
The Queensland Government provides annual funding of $60,000 to YMCA Queensland to present this unique opportunity to young people in Queensland.

N.B. From Clare’s proud mum:  This is Clare’s second year of being selected fro the Youth Parliament.  This is a special achievement in that the number of ‘returnees’ selected is fewer than for the initial Youth Parliament attendees.  Clare is also the first student from Bray Park High School to be selected to attend, so she is special for both the initial selection and for being included in the group selected to attend for that second year.

Well done Clare Hohns!  You do both Dayboro and your high school proud.
