The St Lucia Orchestra Presents
LEROY WALTZES TO VIENNA
The St Lucia Orchestra (to be known in future as the Brisbane City Pops Orchestra) returns to Mt Mee on Sunday 25th May with “Leroy Waltzes to Vienna”, a concert that looks at the evolution of music in 3/4time. It features the work of some famous 19th century waltz composers of old Vienna and the work of Leroy Anderson, an American composer of the 20th century, and some ‘bits in between’.
The orchestra will again be conducted by the dynamic Neil Flottman, and will feature two guest artists – soprano Leslie Martin (who is no stranger to Mt Mee audiences) and trumpet virtuoso Ashley Moor.
The spirit of Vienna dominates the nineteenth century selections, with songs from the “Final Four” of Richard Strauss, Johanne Strauss’s “Fruhlingstimmer” and the ever popular “Emperor Waltz” with Weber’s famous “Invitation to the Dance”. We will venture into the early 20th century with Franz Lehar’s “Gold and Silver Waltz” – written in honour of Princess Pauline von Metternich when she attended Vienna’s glittering Gold and Silver Ball of 1902. Then we move forward fifty years and more to hear some of the best of that very popular contemporary composer, Leroy Anderson.
There will be much more – including a Suppe overture and a stirring Fucik march, and an amazing performance of Vivaldi’s trumpet concerto by guest star Ashley Moor. This will be a concert in the best SLO tradition!
Soprano Leslie Martin needs little introduction to regular Mt Mee concert-goers, who hold great respect and affection for her. Leslie is now a major figure in Australian opera, not only as a brilliant performer but as a producer of interesting and unusual opera events throughout the country.
Like Leslie, conductor Neil Flottman is also no stranger to Mt Mee. Neil has enormous experience in his trade as a flautist, academic, and as an eminent conductor. His conducting gigs include the Queensland, Sydney, Melbourne and Tasmanian Symphonies, the ABC Sinfonia, the Queensland Philharmonic Orchestra and both the Queensland and Australian Ballets – that is eminence!
This is the first time we have seen Ashley Moor. Originally a Toowoomba boy who played trumpet from a very early age, Ashley completed a B. Mus. at the Queensland Conservatorium. Gripped by a wanderlust, Ash then travelled to Vancouver, where he worked with the Vancouver Symphony while studying under the great Vincent Chicowicz and others. Then he spent some years in Santiago, Chile and some with the Hobart Symphony, before returning to Brisbane to settle with his young family. He plays and performs with panache across a variety of trumpet styles and is a founding member of the Clem4-Industrial Jazz Ensemble.
The usual Sunday afternoon concert series arrangements will apply- most importantly (for many partners) the Country Afternoon Tea, at interval. The show begins at 2pm sharp, and entry is still $25.00 – or $20.00 for pension card holders.
Please book early, as this concert will be a sell-out. Phone Kay, 5498 2104 or Joyce 5498 2270.
This is the first concert in our Sunday Afternoon series for 2014 – a ‘not-for profit’ community activity of the Mt Mee Public Hall Inc. The series is generously supported by the Moreton Bay Regional Council.
