May2011_One million dental checks

on offer for Australian teens

Senator for Queensland Mark Furner today urged more than 23,694 teenagers in the Moreton Bay local government area to book an appointment for a dental check subsidised by the Medicare Teen Dental Plan this year.
“Medicare Australia has commenced mailing vouchers for preventative dental checks to these eligible teenagers,” Senator Furner said.
“I encourage teenagers to use the vouchers sooner rather than later, and get into the habit of having an annual check-up.”
Senator Furner said the Medicare Teen Dental Plan was about helping teenagers get into the habit of having regular dental health checks to reduce the risk of major dental problems later in life.
“More than one million preventative dental checks have been provided to Australian teenagers since the scheme started,” Senator Furner said.
The vouchers can be used during the 2011 calendar year and provide up to $159.85 towards the cost of a preventative dental check.
The check consists of an oral examination and, if required, X-rays, a scale and clean, fluoride treatment, oral hygiene instruction, dietary advice and fissure sealing.
To be eligible, a teenager must be entitled to Medicare benefits, aged 12–17 years for at least part of the calendar year, and be receiving certain government benefits individually or as part of a family.
Those who meet these criteria during the course of the year will be sent a voucher once they become eligible.
