May 2010 . . . Letter to Editor re Email Accounts

Dear Editor,

Recently a local person had their Gmail account hacked, this may or may not have been a result of Google’s allegation that their servers in China were hacked but is a very likely scenario.
A lot of people have Gmail, Yahoo and Hotmail email accounts, just to name a few, while they may appear to be secure and unhackable they are in fact open to attack from nerds, with nothing better to do.
People generally obtain one of these email accounts for ease of access to emails while they are on holidays or commute between home and work.
Many Internet Service Providers actually allow access to your email account via a web browser, this is a far more secure option.
While not an absolutely fool proof option, it is actually a far better option, because if the worst actually happened, and this email account was hacked, you can regain control of it, whereas with Gmail, Yahoo or Hotmail email accounts they are virtually impossible to regain control of the account.
Another option is to have your own domain name, this will also allow you to have virtually unlimited Email addresses, while maintaining full control.
