A Taste of Medieval Mahem

The Mercanaries of the Silver Crescent (MOSC) are back again for Dayboro Day this year! There will be a large display of Medieval War Horsemanship skills and historical re-enactments at the Old Mill Veterinary Surgery.

Bigger and better than last year, with twice the number of horses and riders, MOSC will be demonstrating an array of skills including a War Horse Demonstration and Mounted Melee. The festivities will also include a Skill at Arms display, which includes:

– Quintain and Lance Demonstrations (The Quintain was used for training in the use of the Lance and involves striking a target with the weapons such as a lance / jousting stick)
– Ring and Shield targeting (Big wicker rings are picked up, with the lance, off a stand; and the shields are knocked off  a stand with the lance.
– Chopping Moor’s heads (Either cabbages or apples are sliced from a stand by sword, whilst galloping along on horseback)
– Spear Throwing
MOSC, who have over 20 years of involvement in the re-enactment world, are also using this opportunity to talk to people on the history of the medieval era as well as share their involvement in the annual Abbey Museum’s Medieval Fair.
The event will be even more eye opening with horses and riders being in full medieval re-enactment costumes, based around the 14th Century Crusades, so you will get a look at both European and Middle Eastern Costuming.
Also joining the festivities this year is a good friend of the Old Mill Veterinary Surgery’s, Peter Scriven, a dedicated long-term member of the Miniature Horse Association. Peter will be showing off his beautiful miniature horses and offering expertly led carriage rides.
