Mar2012_WOULD YOU LIKE TO LIVE MORE SIMPLY

The current economic situation is putting pressure on us all.  We are all struggling to keep up with fuel, food and electricity bills.  At the same time the threat of climate change and our growing mountains of waste are calling us to change the way we live.  This is not an easy thing to do on your own.  That’s why we are calling for people to join our Living Simply support group.

By meeting every fortnight we can swap ideas and encourage each other to start making changes to the way we live.  For example, do you regularly buy chicken stock for cooking?  Why do this when in ten minutes you could throw your left over roast chicken bones and some vegetables into a pot, leave it to simmer for a few hours and make your own to store in the freezer.
Have you ever Googled the “Eastern Garbage Patch”?  According to Greenpeace, about 100 million tonnes of plastic are produced each year; 10 percent of this ends up in the ocean and some of it has formed a floating island the size of Texas.
Turtles in our own Moreton Bay are suffering agonizing deaths from consuming plastic bags.  The bags cause the production of gases which cause the turtles to float, making it impossible for them to dive down to find food.  They slowly starve to death.  You can begin to reduce your consumption of plastic by using your own reusable bags at the checkout.
Each fortnight we will cover a different topic including growing vegetables, mending clothes, cooking, and reducing waste.
Our first meeting will be held on Sunday afternoon, March 11 at 2pm and we will look at ways we can reduce our electricity bills.
