NRL player, literacy advocate and Queensland Australian of the Year 2012 nominee, Preston Campbell, helped kick off Moreton Bay Region’s National Year of Reading celebrations at Caboolture Library on February 14, 2012.
Moreton Bay Regional Council Mayor, Allan Sutherland said the celebrations were all about encouraging reading and highlighting the joy and educational benefits it can bring.
“Literacy skills are some of the most important life tools you can have and these celebrations will promote reading which will help to get them off to a good start,” Mayor Sutherland said.
“National Year of Reading through libraries, community groups and government organisations around Australia aims to change that.”
The National Year of Reading celebrations will run until December and will include a number of activities, author talks and competitions including the ReadSnapShare Photography competition.
“All library members over 16, no matter what their literacy level, are encouraged to get involved in ReadSnapShare, our first National Year of Reading competition.
Library membership is free, so to participate in ReadSnapShare sign up at your local library, take a photo of how you’re celebrating the National Year of Reading and post it on the Libraries Facebook page (www.facebook.com/MBRC.libraries) for a chance to win an e-Reader or a $100 book voucher.
The competition will run until September 30, 2012 with two winners selected each month to go into a final prize draw.
Winning photos will be exhibited in Moreton Bay Region Libraries during December 2012.
