Hazel was born in Caboolture to Charles and Anne Hewitt on the 10th November, 1925. She was the fourth child in a family of six, five daughters and one son. The Hewitt family lived on Mt Mee and owned a dairy farm but on Hazel’s Birth Certificate her father’s occupation was Teamster.
He also had a Bullock Team which moved timber from Mt Mee down the sometimes treacherous slopes to D’Aguliar or Dayboro to go on to Brisbane by train.
Hazel attended Mt Mee School where she loved poetry, reading and concerts. At the completion of her Primary School years she helped her mother at home with the younger children and also helped her older sisters with their young families. She married Cecil Eaton also from the Mt Mee/ Kilcoy area in 1947 and they built their first home in Dayboro. They then purchased a larger home in downtown Dayboro, in Williams Street, in 1953 where they raised their family, Cecily, Leonie and Michael.
Hazel was involved in the Dayboro Anglican Church, helping raise funds by cooking for cake stalls and other functions. She also supported her beloved husband Cec when he purchased the Dayboro Butchery, a lifelong ambition of his, which he operated very successfully for approximately 14 years.
During this time Cec and Hazel contributed to their local community, supporting the Dayboro Ambulance, the Dayboro Show Society, as well as supporting the Dayboro State School, where their three children attended.
Sadly ill health forced Cec to sell the butcher shop and soon afterwards Cec passed away in 1974. Hazel was left to raise Michael alone, as Cecily and Leonie were married by this time.
Tragically Michael became ill at 15 years of age and lost his battle with Auto Immune Disease in 1982 – aged 21 years. Hazel loved and cared for both Cec and Michael with great compassion grace and dignity.
With love and support from her daughters Cecily and Leonie, as well as extended family members and friends, Hazel decided to make a new start in Buderim and spent close to thirty years there making new friends, whilst always keeping in touch with old friends and growing old gracefully.
She always loved her garden and it was a very special garden that she created in her retirement. Recently Hazel was made a life member of Buderim Garden Club for her fantastic contribution towards that organisation.
Hazel passed away in the Buderim Hospital on the 27th of December 2011 and was taken home to Mt Mee Church where she had married her beloved Cecil and laid to rest in the Mt Mee Cemetery adjoining the paddock of her family’s Dairy Farm.
Hazel is survived by Cecily and Owen Brockhurst of Miles and their children Terese and Nicholas, Leonie and Terry Kearney of Samsonvale and their sons Justin Kearney and Kate Donovan, Kris and Bronwyn Kearney.
