Did you know that your dog’s smelly breath could mean more than just a bad smell?
Smelly breath is an indication of dental disease, which has been linked to everything from weight loss and poor condition to aggression, heart valve disease, kidney disease, respiratory infections, abnormal wear of other teeth, and even pain and discomfort. More than 80% of dogs show signs of dental disease by the age of three.

Bad breath is often an indication that tartar has built up to the point where it is irritating the gums and harbouring bacteria. The blood supply of the gums is so well developed that bacteria pass across into the blood vessels and into the body causing damage to body organs, ill health and discomfort.
Dogs and cats need regular dental care, just like us humans. But since they won’t stand still and nicely open their mouth and let us scale and polish their teeth, not to mention perform extractions (!), all procedures need to be performed under a general anaesthetic, to ensure the safety of your pet, and to make sure all surfaces of the teeth get cleaned.
At the Old Mill Veterinary Surgery, we have recently acquired a new state-of the-art ultrasonic dental machine and to celebrate this we are having a dental awareness month. Our nurses have all completed a course in dental health and we are offering free dental health checks for all clients.
As part of your dental health check, you will receive a report on your pet’s dental health along with any recommendations to improve your pet’s dental health and a dental sample bag.
