Mar2011 Free flood recovery plant pathology diagnostic service

Growers are encouraged to take advantage of a free plant disease diagnostic service set up to help identify and target diseases in horticultural crops affected by recent floods and wet weather.
Agri-Science Queensland principal plant pathologist Denis Persley said the Department of Employment, Economic Development and Innovation (DEEDI) was keen to provide this service as part of its flood recovery response to help growers make the best crop protection decisions.
“We don’t want growers wasting their time and money by spraying crops with fungicides that may not target the real problem,” he said.
“If there is any doubt over what disease crops may have, I encourage growers to send a sample of the plant to DEEDI rather than treat it without checking first.
“The disease needs to be accurately identified in order to select the right control measure.
“This free diagnostic service can identify the disease and allow growers to make the right decision in protecting their crops.”
Mr Persley said to access the free plant pathology service growers should complete the sample submission form and send the plant sample to the Agri-Science Queensland plant pathology team.
“To help the DEEDI scientists provide a full service, growers are encouraged to please include as much detail on the submission form as possible,” he said.
“The free plant pathology service is to assist growers in the aftermath of January 2011 Queensland floods and is limited up until and including 31 March 2011.”
Growers can access the free diagnosis service submission form and instructions on how to prepare and send the sample by calling DEEDI’s Customer Service Centre on 13 25 23, or by visiting the flood information section for primary producers on DEEDI’s website at www.deedi.qld.gov.au
