Mar2011 CYCLIST AWARE PROGRAM

Dayboro Police are currently conducting a program aimed at both cyclists and vehicle drivers.    We are approaching individual riders as well as clubs to pass on a message about the main complaints we receive about cyclists – multiple riders across the road and difficulties in passing groups of riders.  We have also increased patrols of peak riding times to identify any inappropriate riding habits.
We also receive complaints from cyclists in relation to vehicle drivers.   These usually relate to passing too close to riders.   A number of collisions and near misses have also occurred with vehicles crossing over the centre line to pass cyclists whilst vehicles are coming from the opposite direction.
The road rules provide that a cyclist can ride abreast of no more than one other rider.  We do acknowledge that there are sections of road where double lines or corners can make it difficult to pass two cyclists.   We are encouraging riders to consider this so that traffic is not unduly delayed.
However, it is important to exercise patience.  The onus is still on a vehicle passing cyclists to do so in a manner that is safe to both the cyclists and oncoming vehicles.
We would encourage motorists to report offending behaviour by cyclists, particularly where there is a regular pattern such as a particular road and time of day.  This will help us to patrol most effectively.   Similarly, we also welcome information from cyclists about irresponsible actions by vehicle drivers.
We would also stress that as with most things, it is only a small percentage of either cyclists or vehicle drivers who are doing the wrong thing.  Our aim is to improve safety for all road users.
